SCHOOL LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

Best Practices for Campus and School Lockdown Procedures

During campus emergencies, it is vital that students and faculty are prepared to react quickly.

Recent emergency situations in schools and on school campuses have caused many schools to re-evaluate procedures. A school lockdown is issued when there is a threat to students, staff and faculty members.

There are different categories of school lockdown procedures. Types of lockdowns include:

  • Full Lockdown: This scenario involves a serious threat that requires immediate action.
  • External Threat: This type of threat occurs outside of the school building or campus. The goal of this lockdown is to prevent the threat from entering the school or campus.
  • Internal Threat: This threat exists when the danger is inside of the school or campus. The goal of this procedure should be to keep everyone safe until the threat is completely removed.
  • Shelter-in-Place: Usually an external health hazard where building evacuations are not recommended.

The types of events that require lockdowns include situations such as the following:

School lockdowns procedures require the cooperation of the faculty, staff and students. While every school will have their own unique set of rules in their lockdown procedure, the following are general guidelines and best practices for having an effective lockdown.

Faculty & staff should do the following if a lockdown is ordered:

  • Lock all doors and windows immediately. If a door cannot be locked, attempt to quickly block the door with heavy items.
  • Never open doors or windows unless ordered to do so by a safety or school official. Always ask for documentation from an official to confirm their identity.
  • Turn off all lights and close the shades or blinds.
  • Instruct all students to stay low and away from the window and doors.
  • Keep students inside of the classroom.
  • Silence televisions, cell phones and other electronics.
  • Clear hallways, bathrooms and any area or room that cannot be thoroughly secured.
  • Account for every student in the room.
  • Assist those with special needs.
  • Remain indoors and under lockdown until you receive an “all clear” from authorized personnel.

Students should abide by the following rules during a school lockdown:

  • Alert a faculty member or staff if you know that someone is simply pulling a prank.
  • Remain quiet, still, calm and alert.
  • Follow all instructions.
  • Only use cellular devices if it is an emergency or if instructed to do so.

Throughout the school year, schools should have practice drills so that students and staff become familiar with the emergency procedures. By knowing the lockdown procedures and taking the practice drills seriously, you can keep yourself and others safe.

CLASSROOM DOOR -WINDOW SHADE

To complete the Lockdown Protocol, Installations by DC, LLC offers an interior door shade designed to work in conjunction with the exterior window shade offering. Blocking the view into the classroom from the hallway seals the individual classrooms from any hallway view.

The installation of a roller shade on a door by nature is highly abusive to any electronic device. We have designed the hinged bracket* installation to prevent failure despite the use of an operating classroom door.  The unit does not rely on batteries which may fail in an emergency. The door shades operate in conjunction with all the shades in each classroom for full Lockdown compliance.

LOCKDOWN-HALLWAY SECURITY SHADES

A fabric panel is mounted to a motorized roller tube and housed in a headbox or ceiling pocket. This design can be mounted into a drop ceiling, hard surface ceiling or installed as an outside mount. The product width runs from the wall to approximately the middle of the hallway, and ceiling to floor. The units are staggered from side to side of the hallway running the length of the hall. The finale size and number of units is determined by the width, length, and number of access doors in any given hallway.

Before & After

The wireless control of the shades can be regulated by the administration, building security and staff. Entire buildings can be coordinated to activate all the screens to drop into protective position simultaneously. The panels can be in a full deployment in less than one minute for the entire facility.

Unlike many alternate systems, i.e. roller shutters and folding gates, personnel are not exposed while operating the system.  Individual sections and units can be operated independently so security can expose areas for “all clear” approval.
